uoi Tre newspaper introduced Friday a new version of the English learning section on its English online publication, http://tuoitrenews.vn, at the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City in a bid to further encourage the study of the language among city students.
The paper debuted the section, which supplies free-of-charge online English lessons to its readers, in May and has continuously improved it ever since.
“We have added more interactive materials to the section to make it more appealing to Vietnamese learners of English, especially high school and college students,” Truong Viet Toan, in charge of the section, said to student union leaders from 62 junior colleges and universities during the introduction.
With two latest additions together with other improvements, the section now has 7 areas including Lessons, Grammar, Listening, Articles, Quizzes – Fun, Vocabulary, and Ask Us.
Writing, soft skills, and a wide range of other topics are covered in Lessons while grammatical points suitable for learners of all levels are the main focus of Grammar.
Listening, one of the additions, deals with news stories extracted from http://tuoitrenews.vn which are read by two American voices – male and female – and other units prepared to familiarize learners with different English accents.
Articles focuses on reading comprehension skills, Vocabulary on word usage, while Quizzes – Fun is meant to bring relaxation and entertainment along with jokes and funny puzzles.
Learners can ask about English in Ask Us, the other newly added area, where Tuoitrenews and its consultants, who are seasoned teachers, will answer questions with clear and detailed explanations in Vietnamese.
A glossary often comes at the end of each lesson with English definitions and Vietnamese equivalents.
These materials are accessible at http://www.tuoitrenews.vn/cmlink/tuoitrenews/education/nhip-cau-anh-ngu
The Australian Center for Education and Training (ACET), a leading provider of quality Academic English and IELTS preparation courses, has provided the materials of the section since its inception.
ACET, established in 2002, is a partnership between IDP Education Australia and UTS:Insearch, two international organizations specializing in education and training. It has branches in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and currently has over 1,500 students enrolled in its courses.
The launch of the new version is part of a broader program, named “Nhịp cầu Anh ngữ” (literally translated as “English Bridge”), the newspaper organizes in cooperation with the city’s student association in order to help city students with their English study.
The program is made up of such other activities as seminars, online English contests, the establishment of a scholarship fund, among others.
