Defender Xuan Hieu, a member of the national football team, was hospitalized Monday after he was severely injured in an unlikely accident in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.
Hieu, who was on the Vietnam team that attended the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia and recruited to prepare for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012, was walking away from the Ham Rong Sports Training Center after the morning practice session when two buses speeding in opposite directions passed by.
Hieu immediately jumped aside to dodge the vehicles, but when one of them, a North to South passenger bus with a Dak Lak license plate, passed by the defender, its side door for the luggage hold unexpectedly burst open and hit him on the left shoulder, waist and thigh.
The impact threw Hieu several meters down the pavement.
Hieu was immediately taken to a local hospital for first aid, and later transferred to Quy Nhon Hospital.
It wasn’t until later that afternoon that Hieu was able to breathe without a respirator and slightly move his limbs, though his chest remained painful.
National coach Phan Thanh Hung said if Hieu fails to recover by this weekend, he will recruit defender Vo Hoang Quang from SHB Da Nang as his replacement.
In related news, on September 2 Vietnam's top female sprinter, Truong Thanh Hang, had her right leg brokenin a motorcycle accident during a regular practice run with her fellow athletes on a wide road along the seashore of Da Nang.
Hang was running on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, at a distance of 0.6m from the roadside, when a motorcyclist unexpectedly hit her from behind.
She has now fully recovered from the accident.
