• Striker rescues point against Newcastle with stunning goal
• 'Luis is a joy to work with … he has a real hunger'
Brendan Rodgers hailed Luis Suárez as "unplayable" and claimed signing support for the striker in January will be crucial for Liverpool's campaign after the Uruguay international rescued a point against Newcastle United.
Suárez
produced a moment of individual brilliance to score his 10th goal of
the season as Liverpool recovered from Yohan Cabaye's first-half strike
at Anfield. The 25-year-old has scored seven of Liverpool's 13 Premier
League goals this season and was also on the receiving end of a
disgraceful challenge from Fabricio Coloccini that earned the Newcastle
captain a straight red card.
Alan Pardew marched on to the pitch
at the final whistle to speak with the referee, Anthony Taylor,
although, having reviewed the incident afterwards, the Newcastle manager
defended Coloccini's character rather than his actions. Rodgers claimed
the Argentina international was simply driven to distraction by another
mesmerising performance from the former Ajax captain. "I thought Luis
was unplayable," the Liverpool manager said.
"When Coloccini got
sent off he was frustrated. Coloccini is a good defender, he's been a
great player over a few years for Newcastle but Luis is so bright, so
clever. He's a real world class striker and on that form today he really
provokes and frustrates defenders."
Rodgers wants several new
strikers in January although, despite reports in Holland of a deal being
done for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Liverpool denied the Schalke forward is
on their list. The Liverpool manager added: "I'm not worried about being
over-reliant on Luis. He gets paid to score goals. Obviously I would
like them to be a bit more spread out and everyone knows that getting
more strikers is the key feature for us going forward.
"We need to
get goals from other areas but I can't complain when we perform and
play to the level we did today. It us gives us great hope that once we
get that profile and that type of player in, then it is going to finish
off a lot of great work for us.
"Luis is an absolute joy to work
with. He's aiming to get better every day he trains and he is still a
young player. He's committed his best years to us here, which is
brilliant. He just has a real hunger for the game. We play him in that
false number nine role. He is not your traditional number nine who
stands up there, stood static. That's why when we get a number of
players in who can work off his qualities it is going to make us a real
threat and allow us to penetrate behind him."
Newcastle lost Demba
Ba, Yohan Cabaye and James Perch to injury during the game, the latter
for perhaps a month with a thigh strain, and Pardew had few complaints
over Coloccini's dismissal, though he did raise the slim prospect of an
appeal.
The Newcastle manager said: "I've seen it a couple of
times and it doesn't look too clever, if I'm honest. From one angle it
looks like he's trying to stop himself but I think I might have to
accept it. At the time I didn't see it and I was really unsure. I went
to see the referee to ask him what it was for, he said it was for
dangerous intent.
"I wanted to know for sure and he said serious
foul play. But I didn't want to make a big issue about the referee
because their morale must be really low with everything that's going on.
Because he's my captain I just wanted to know. Part of me is thinking
that there's no intent from Colo because I know what he's like but,
looking at the video, I think there's nowhere for us to go. I'll have to
discuss it with the club secretary."
Liverpool remain 12th in the
table after 10 matches and only two Premier League wins this season.
But Rodgers added: "I thought our performance was outstanding. We were
terrific, in the first half our possession and intensity was
relentless."
