The Paris-Sub 11 held a ceremony in Orsay, a city on the outskirts of Paris, on November 16 to honour Professor Ngo Bao Chau who has won the Fields Medal.
The President of the University, Guy Couarraze, said that the university is very proud to welcome their former professor who has previously won Clay Research Awards in 2007 and now Fields Medal. He added that Ngo Bao Chau is a bridge to enhance co-operation in tertiary teaching and scientific research between France and Vietnam.
The French Minister for Higher Education and Research, Valerie Pecresse, affirmed that Ngo Bao Chau is a professor of France, Vietnam, and the US and a representative for three continents, Europe, Asia and America. She emphasised that the Fields Medal is a prestigious prize for the mathematics field in general and Vietnam in particular as well as brings honour to the French mathematic tradition, especially the Paris-Sud 11 University.
The Vietnamese Ambassador to France, Le Kinh Tai, expressed his belief that with support from the French Government, professors and researchers, Vietnamese colleagues as well as Chau’s effort, educational co-operation between Vietnam and France will further develop. Vietnam will try to create the best condition for Chau to further contribute to the development of the motherland’s mathematic tradition.
Tai said that more than 6,000 students are studying and doing research in France.
