DTiNews interviewed Le Quy Phuong, Head of the Vietnamese mission to the 16th ASIAD games being held in China’s Guangzhou Province.

Is everything ready for the Vietnamese sports delegation?

Our team has made careful preparations for these competitions. Psychological factors always play an important part in success and all the members feel very comfortable to start.

This year, Vietnamese athletes are extremely determined and they also anticipate difficulties and challenges and keep their spirits firm. Besides, during the practising process and contests, our athletes had a chance to meet strong teams around the world. Therefore, they will be more confident to attend continental sports events.

Could you detail the doping check process, accommodation and catering conditions of the athletes at the 16th ASIAD Games?

Doping checks are always top priorities, not only in this event but also in every sports contest. To prepare for the 16th ASIAD Games, we took 10 doping samples at random at three centres in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang to send to the world leading anti-doping lab in Beijing. These samples were taken at random so they ensure high accuracy.

A week ago, the lab sent the test results to us and all samples were clean. Thus, no athletes were removed from the delegation. This shows better awareness of the athletes in using banned medicines.

I worked with the organising board on the accommodation and catering services. We discussed creating the most favourable conditions for athletes such as accommodation and travel. The organising board said that there were from 800 to 900 dishes for athletes.

What do you think about the possibility that the Vietnamese team can win 4-6 gold medals in the 16th ASIAD Games and which sports do you expect them to do best in?

The Vietnamese delegation can achieve its set goals for gold medals. In addition to careful preparations, the state has also offered investments so athletes can compete with foreign teams. Trainers of all 12 major sports have selected 62 outstanding faces for us to nurture.

Karate is among nine or ten sports that Vietnam can gain gold medals in during the games. Although the target is one gold medal in Karate, we have three top athletes in this sports that can potentially win gold medals. Unfortunately, one of our top karate athletes, Nguyen Hoang Ngan, was injured.

The next hopeful sport is sepak takraw (Cau May). We recieved two gold medals during the last ASIAD Games. Other hopeful areas are chess, Chinese chess, shooting, billiard snooker, wushu and fencing.

Do you feel pressure when acting as head of the delegation for the first time?

For the first time working as head of the Vietnamese sports mission for such a big sports event like ASIAD, I think I will have to try my best to fulfill the duty. I have learned much from previous people in my position.

This year, we are well-prepared for tough tournaments and I hope that we will get positive results.

Thanks you and wish the Vietnamese delegation successful at the 16th Asiad!
