The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade said on March 6 it had received the announcement from General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China.
The Chinese agency also sent the same memo to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Chinese said it had reached its decision following the recent re-emergence of foot-and-mouth disease and bird flu in Vietnam.
The agency noted that only countries and territories that are subject to the country’s meat quarantine procedures were allowed to export animal products into China.
According to Vietnam’s National Steering Board for Bird Flu Influenza Prevention and Control, bird flu has spread to 12 provinces and cities nationwide.
The disease has killed two in the southern provinces of Kien Giang and Soc Trang, while another patient in Binh Duong Province is still being treated at the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
Meanwhile, more than 52,000 poultry infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus have been destroyed nationwide.
Foot-and-mouth disease has reoccurred in Vietnam, including Brel Village in the central highlands province of Gia Lai.
