Experts look at ways to boost higher education

More than 160 domestic and foreign leaders, managers, lecturers and postgraduates at a conference yesterday, July 14, discussed ways to improve the quality of training, research and management in universities and colleges.
Dr Nguyen Thi Le Huong, deputy head of Ministry of Education and Training's tertiary education department, said the system should develop strategic and general planning; increase accountability and social responsibility; develop quality assurance systems; and strengthen international co-operation in training and research.
Currently, Vietnam has 414 universities and colleges, covering most provinces and cities.

Vietnam has signed agreements with 10 countries that recognise each other's degrees and diplomas, she said.

There are 10,000 international students enrolled in universities in Vietnam, she added.

Speaking at the seminar, Luna Lacopini of Geneva University in Switzerland said despite the increase in the number of university students, higher education in Vietnam still faced challenges, including recruitment of qualified lecturers, low salaries and strong governmental control of curricula.

The higher education system should improve data and data collection techniques in order to have more accurate information, which would guarantee more effective and efficient reforms, she said.

Increased collaboration with foreign universities could foster the establishment of a national accrediation system based on international standards, allowing Vietnam's higher education institutions to integrate into the international area.

Through collaboration with international and foreign universities, Vietnamese students and faculty members can become more familiar with new teaching methods.

Other topics discussed at the conference include the application of IT in training reform, including the technology of personal wikis in higher education and application of Virtual I programme teaching languages.
