UN Secretary General in Hanoi

VietNamNet Bridge – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Hanoi in the afternoon of October 28 to visitVietnam and attend the 3rd ASEAN-UN Sum





President Nguyen Minh Triet and his wife welcomed the UN Secretary General at the Presidential Palace the same afternoon.

Today, October 29, Mr. Ban Ki-moon met with Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

He also paid a visit to the UN School in Hanoi, the Centre for HIV Prevention in Tu Liem District, Hanoi.

He will participate in the 3rd ASEAN-UN Summit tomorrow, October 30.


On this occasion, Vietnam and the UN will jointly issue a book about the relations between ASEAN and the UN.

This is Ban Ki-moon’s first visit to Vietnam as the UN Secretary General since 2007.

According to the UN mission in VietnamVietnam is among the countries included in the experimental implementation ofthe One UN Initiative. 


The relations between Vietnam and the UN have developed strongly in recent years. Vietnam has contributed to the UN’s activities in many areas. It successfully undertook the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term. It is also considered as a good example in realizing the Millenium Goals, in effectively managing and using ODA and a leading example in implementing the One UN Initiative.
