NAKHON PHANOM : Police have filed six charges against three men accused of illegally transporting almost 2,000 dogs to Vietnam to be butchered for human consumption.
Nakhon Phanom administrative officers and police on Thursday arrested three suspects _ two Thais and a Vietnamese _ in separate operations near the Thai-Laos border.
The authorities found the first six-wheeled truck carrying about 600 live dogs on a road in Nakhon Phanom's Na Thom district.

Nakhon Phanom governor Roengsak Mahawinitchaimontree said the dogs were being transported from nearby Sakon Nakhon province and were expected to cross the Mekong River, destined for Vietnam.
Police yesterday pressed six charges against the three suspects.
The charges range from illegal transport of animals, unlicensed trade in animals, the transport of dogs to an area under rabies monitoring, cruelty to animals, not having dogs vaccinated and lacking documents to certify their vaccination.
The dogs are being treated at the Nakhon Phanom Animal Quarantine Station. All of them were fatigued and weakened and many were wounded.
Some succumbed to the terrible conditions during trafficking and died. Livestock officials were seen carrying dead dogs for burial yesterday. Earlier, 119 of the dogs had died both through suffocation in the cramped cages or when they were thrown from the back of the trucks as the alleged traffickers sped away from officers, says an official of the Livestock Development Department.
The quarantine station yesterday asked for donations of dog food.
People who learned of the news came to the station and gave donations throughout the day.
Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang, adviser to the Royal Thai Police, and his wife donated 10,000 baht.
